Graduate School Rules and Regulations

1.     Students registered before 2016/2017 Fall Term:

 

 

·       According to the updated YÖK rules and regulations, expelling from graduate schools is possible. Therefore, the term counts of students have been revised and a maximum period of study is calculated starting from (and including) 2016/2017 Fall term. 

·       The maximum period of course stage is 4 terms for MASTER'S students, and those who cannot complete this stage within this period are to be expelled at the end of the 4th term. The total maximum period is 6 terms, those who cannot complete their thesis within this period are to be expelled. e.g.: All students who were registered before 2017-2108 Fall term are studying their 4th term in the 2017-2018 Spring Term.  

o   MSc Course Stage: 7 courses+1 Seminar+2.5 CGPA

o   MSc Graduation:  7 courses+1 Seminar+2.5 CGPA+MSc Thesis Course+Speciality Field Course

o   Students who are at the thesis writing stage are required to add the Thesis Course and Speciality Field Course each term and to pass them in the final term. 

·       Publication: These students are subject to the publication requirements announced on the Graduate School Rules and Regulations dated 2014. 

·       The maximum period of course stage is 4 terms for DOCTORAL students, and those who cannot complete this stage within this period are to be expelled at the end of the 4th term. Students who complete the thesis stage have 8 more terms to complete their theses. The total maximum period is 12 terms, those who cannot complete their thesis within this period are to be expelled.

o   PhD Course Stage: 8 courses+3CGPA OR 7 courses+Research Methods and Scientific Ethics+1 Seminar+3 CGPA 

o   PhD Qualifier Exam: Students are required to complete the course stage. (students who have not taken and not failed the qualifier exam are required to take it until the 5th term starting from 2016/2017 fall. Otherwise, it will be regarded as the first failure.)

o   PhD Graduation:  8 courses+PhD Seminar+3CGPA+PhD Thesis Course+Speciality Field Course the PhD Seminar is required to have been taken and passed until the term that the student is willing to graduate. (Seminar course will not be asked for graduation applications this spring term and 2018-2019 Fall Term; however, a PhD student who has not graduated until the end of 2018-2019 Fall Term will be required to take seminar) OR 7 courses+PhD Seminar+Research Methods and Scientific Ethics+3CGPA+PhD Thesis Course+Speciality Field Course 

o   Students who are at the thesis writing stage are required to add the Thesis Course and Speciality Field Course each term and to pass them in the final term. 

·       Publication: These students are subject to the publication requirements announced on the Graduate School Rules and Regulations dated 2014. (Acceptance letter is required for articles sent to journals.)

 

 

2.     Students registered in (and after) the 2016/2017 Fall term: 

 

 

·       They are required to take the Research Methods and Scientific Ethics course. 

·       Core Course Requirement: 

o   Master's and Ph.D. students registered in (and after) the 2016/2017 Spring term are required to take the core courses that are set by the Departments.

 

·       Maximum period of the course stage for Master's degree programs is 4 terms, students who cannot complete this stage within this period are to be expelled. Students who complete the courses have 2 more terms for writing their thesis. The total maximum period is 6 terms and students who cannot complete their thesis within this period are to be expelled.  

o   MSc course stage: 7 courses+1 Seminar+2.5 CGPA +Research Methods and Scientific Ethics 

o   MSc graduation: 7 courses+1 Seminar+2.5 CGPA +Research Methods and Scientific Ethics+MSc Thesis Course+Speciality Field Course  

o   Students who are at the thesis writing stage are required to add the Thesis Course and Speciality Field Course each term and to pass them in the final term.

·      Publication: Students who were registered in (and after) the 2016-2017 Spring Term are subject to the publication requirements announced on the Graduate School Rules and Regulations dated 2016.  

·        Maximum period of the course stage for Doctoral degree programs is 4 terms, students who cannot complete this stage within this period are to be expelled at the end of the term. Students who complete the courses have 8 more terms for writing their thesis. The total maximum period is 12 terms and students who cannot complete their thesis within this period are to be expelled

o  PhD Course Stage: 7 courses+3.00 CGPA+Research Methods and Scientific Ethics+ PhD Seminar (6001 coded) 

o   Ph.D. Qualifier Stage: 7 courses+3.00 CGPA+Research Methods and Scientific Ethics+ Ph.D. Seminar (6001 coded)  (Students who have not taken the qualifier exam are required to take the exam until the end of 5th term at most. Otherwise, their first failure will be recorded.)

o   The student is required to set the Thesis Monitoring Committee within 1 month maximum following the qualifier exam and within 6 months maximum they are required to submit their thesis proposal. Otherwise, the student will be considered unsuccessful. 

o   Ph.D. Graduation: 7 courses+3.00 CGPA+Research Methods and Scientific Ethics+ Ph.D. Seminar (6001 coded)+ Ph.D. Thesis Course+Speciality Field Course

o   Students who are in the thesis writing stage are required to select the Thesis Course and Speciality Field Course, and they are obliged to "pass" them in the final term that they want to graduate. 

o   Publication: Students who were registered in (and after) the 2016-2017 Spring Term are subject to the publication requirements announced on the Graduate School Rules and Regulations dated 2016. 

 

 

3.     Non-Thesis Master's Students:

 

 

·       Course Stage: They are required to take 10 courses(30 credits)+2.5 CGPA+Term Project Course+Research Methods and Scientific Ethics.

·       Non-Thesis master's students are expelled if they fail at the end of 3rd term or cannot meet the required conditions for completing the program. 

 

 

 

4.     Being Expelled (Being Unsuccessful)

 

 

·       Students who fail at the end of the maximum periods set by programs or who cannot complete the programs are expelled

·       Students who cannot pass the pre-requisite courses (Scientific Preparation-Bilimsel Hazırlık) within two terms are expelled

·       Students of master's programs (with thesis) who; 

o   cannot complete the total required credit/non-credit courses within 4 terms with a minimum CGPA of 2.50/4.00,

o   fail the thesis study within the maximum period, 

o   do not take the thesis defence exam or do not meet the conditions for taking the thesis defence exam, 

o   whose thesis is considered unsuccessful and hence rejected are expelled from the university

·      Non-Thesis master's students are expelled if they fail at the end of 3rd term or cannot meet the required conditions for completing the program. 

 

·       Ph.D. Students who;

o   cannot complete the total required credit/non-credit courses within 4 (four) terms for students with a MSc degree (6 terms without a MSc degree) with a minimum CGPA of 2.50/4.00,

o   fail the thesis study within the maximum period, 

o   fail the qualifier twice (2 times),

o   fail the thesis proposal twice (2 times), 

o   considered to fail by the Thesis Monitoring Committee (TİK) twice (two times) successively or 3 times with intervals, 

o   do not take the thesis defense exam or do not meet the conditions for taking the thesis defense exam, 

o   whose thesis is considered unsuccessful and hence rejected are expelled from the university

 

 

5.     Course Add/Drop:

 

 

o   Advisor approval for course adding has been activated, therefore, students are required to keep in contact with their advisors during the add/drop process within the course registration dates. The course registration calendar has changed, click here.

The closed courses are going to be announced following the first advisor approval. Only course adding will be available aftermath and at the end of this process there will be a second advisor approval. Note that course adding will not be possible after advisor approval. 

o   The advisor appointment is obligatory at the end of the 1st term for MSc students and at the end of the 2nd term for PhD students. Students who complete this period are expected to submit their advisor appointment forms to the Graduate School via their Departments.  Students who have completed the periods above and have not completed the advisor appointment procedure will not be able to select any courses. 

o   According to the Rules and Regulations, the graduate school education includes compulsory courses. Students who were registered in and after 201/2017 Spring Term are obliged to take these compulsory courses. 

o   Minimum 50% of the total credits to be completed during the graduate education are required to be taken within the same program. The number of these courses must include the minimum number of compulsory courses of the program.    

o   Maximum 2 of the graduate school courses from another department or from another university can be valid to complete the total required credits.  

o   Students who are registered to the programs whose medium of instruction is a foreign language, all the courses are required to be taken in that foreign language.
