To the Attention of the Students Who Will Apply for Ph.D. Qualifying Exam on 2020-2021 Spring Semester!

       The applications for Qualifying exam will be received from 08 March to 16 March, 2021. The applications will be made online by the students on GSIS automation system. In case that the student faces an error on GSIS even though s/he has already completed the course load based on Article 17 of Senate Codes, it is necessary that a message should be sent on lisansustu.yildiz.edu.tr under the category “Doktora Yeterlik Sorun Bildirme”. Then the student will be informed about the process.

 

        The Written section of Ph.D. Qualifying Exam will be conducted by the departments during the period: 26.04.2021-07.05.2021, and the exact date, time and venue of the exams will be announced by the departments on their websites.  The ones who successfully passes the written section, will take the oral exam until 24.05.2021 on the dates that the departments will announce. It will be decided by the departments whether the Qualifyin exams will be conducted online or face-to-face; and the method, date, time and all the other details regarding the exam will be announced by the departments.

 

      The Ph.D. Qualifying Processes will be conducted based on YTU Graduate Education Regulation Senate Codes, Article 30 (Senate Codes dated 12.01.2021):

 

  • Qualifying Exam consists of two sections: written exam and oral exam.
  • Written Section of the Qualifying Exam: The exam will be conducte in one single session, which covers the graduate courses of the program.
  • The student must achieve at least 70/100 from the Written Qualifying Exam.
  • The ones who fails from the Written Qualifying Exam cannot take the oral exam.
  • The students must achieve at least  50/100 from the Oral Section of the Qualifying Exam.
  • In order to be successful from the Qualifying Exam, the arithmetic mean of the written and oral sections of the  exam must be at least 70/100.

 

       Students on their 6th semester: The Ph.D. students who registered on 2018-2019 Fall Semester but have not taken the qualifying examination yet are considered as failed, because they have already completed their 5th semesters. Out of such students, the ones who do not apply for 2020-2021 Ph.D. Qualifying Exam, who apply but do not take the exam, or who fail from the exam will be considered as failed for the second time, and their registrations will be deleted!!!

 

      Students on their 5th semester: All the students registered on 2018-2019 Spring Semester must apply for Ph.D. Qualifying Exam based on YTU Graduate Education Regulation Senate Codes, as this is their 5th semester. If those students do not apply, or apply but do not take the exam, this will be considered as their first failure!!!

 

        The students who became successful on the Written section but failed on the Oral Section of the Ph.D. Qualifying Exam on 2020-2021 Fall semester, will only attend the Oral Qualifying Exam on condition that they apply on GSIS.

 

        All the Ph.D. students who got registered on 2017-2018 Fall Semester or later are subject to compulsory courses. Therefore in order to apply for qualifying exam, the students must have fulfilled the following conditions regarding course completion.

 

  • For the Ph.D. students registered after their master degree; the course load consists of at least 7 (seven) courses corresponding to at least 21 (twenty-one) credits, Seminar course, Research Methods and Scientific Ethics course. 
  • For the Ph.D. students registered at integrated programs after their bachelor degree; the course load consists of at least 14 (fourteen) courses corresponding to at least 42 (fourty-two) credits, Seminar course, Research Methods and Scientific Ethics course.  
  • At least 4 (four) of the 7 (seven) courses (except for Research Methods and Scientific Ethics Course and Seminar Course) that should be completed within the first 4 semesters of the graduate education must be from the compulsory courses of the registered program and it should cover the minimum number of compulsory courses of that program.
  • At most 3 (three) courses - and 4 (four) for only students of the integrated programes- received from other departments or other higher education institutions may be counted for the total course load of the student.
  • Regarding the Seminar, and Research Methods and Scientific Ethic Courses, the Ph.D. students who registered before 2016-2017 Spring semester are subject to the course load rules of the senate codes on the semester that they got registered. However, the students of the relevant period who have completed the Seminar, and Research Methods and Scientific Ethic Courses may be subject to the current senate codes.
  • Students registered on the programs with a forein language of instruction must take all the courses in the language of their program.

 

      Ph.D. students who got re-registered based on Amnesty Act 7143 on qualifying exam stage:  Based on the decision of the Board of Management of the Graduate School, such students who have taken but failed the Research Methods and Scientific Ethic Courses and Seminar course with 6001 course code, must take these courses and be successful. The qualifying exam applications of the students who failed from these courses will be rejected. For the Ph.D. qualifying exam application; it is necessary to have completed 7 (seven) courses (BB)+ 6001 Seminar (G or at least BB) + Research Methods and Scientific Ethic Course (BB).

 

        The students who do not fulfill the above-mentioned conditions should not apply for qualifying exam, but complete their courses. The applications of such students who do not fulfill the requirements will be rejected!!!
